Santee, Calif. June 19, 2013 — Quality Controlled Manufacturing Inc. (QCMI) is pleased to announce it was named the 2013 #5 Healthiest Company in the Small Business Category by the San Diego Business Journal. The awards event honoring 63 finalists was held on May 9 at the Marriott Del Mar in San Diego. Five awards were given in each of four categories: small business; medium business; large business; and companies headquartered outside of San Diego.

With more than 95 employees, QCMI specializes in the precision machining of all metals including exotic alloys. The company produces components with complex shapes, contours, exacting tolerances and stringent quality requirements. QCMI’s submission documented its positive and promising results in improving employee wellness, along with reducing costs associated with health care and absenteeism. QCMI’s initial wellness program began with the purchase and renovation of its corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in 2009. With the inclusion of an onsite state-of-the-art circuit training equipped gym and two modern, kitchen-equipped break rooms, employees have the opportunity to bring in healthy meals over both shifts, as well as the opportunity to exercise on a daily basis.

In 2012 QCMI hired an onsite Certified Personal Trainer (CPT). With a 5-day a week CPT, employees are able to schedule personalized workouts and get nutrition coaching on a regular basis. In addition to the exercise/nutrition wellness initiative, QCMI provides fresh fruit two days per week for both shifts. A Kaiser Permanente Smoking Cessation Class provided motivation and guidelines to quit smoking. QCMI carried out two 12-week Biggest Losers Challenges resulting in the loss of 228 pounds companywide. For health emergencies, QCMI purchased an automated external defibrillator (AED) and all employees are trained in the prompt delivery of cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

In addition to being one of the healthiest companies, QCMI received the San Diego BBB 2012 Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics in the 25-99 employee category and the San Diego Society for Human Resource Management 2012 Workplace Excellence Award in the small business category.

“QCMI’s day-to-day wellness awareness initiative has paid off already with improved safety records to a substantial drop in Workers Comp claims paid out – from $200,000 in 2011 to $1495 in 2012,” said QCMI COO / CFO, Rick Urban. “Over the long-term the financial benefits will outweigh the current annual investment of approximately $251 plus per employee.”

“Our managers have also reported employee morale has increased since the wellness program was implemented,” said CEO Bob Grande. “However, we believe that our wellness program has the potential to reduce the prevalence and severity of chronic diseases, allowing QCMI employees and their families to lead longer and healthier lives.”
