Santee, Calif. November 19, 2012 — Quality Controlled Manufacturing Inc. (QCMI) is pleased to announce it received a 2012 Workplace Excellence Award from the San Diego Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The 13th Anniversary of the Workplace Excellence Award’s ceremony was held on Nov. 7 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. QCMI was recognized as one of San Diego’s outstanding workplaces based on the employees’ nomination and its Education / Training Competitive Workforce Initiative HR practices. With 98 employees QCMI was named the Marble Winner in the Under 150 Employee category – Small Business.
QCMI specializes in the precision machining of all metals including exotic alloys. The company produces components with complex shapes, contours, exacting tolerances and stringent quality requirements. QCMI provides engineering, R&D, CNC, welding, EDM, NDT, fabrication, inspection, next higher assembly and many additional manufacturing services for the aerospace, power generation, Department of Defense (DOD), oil and gas, marine, and heavy equipment industries.
The San Diego SHRM Workplace Excellence Awards (WEA) is a flagship event. The awards recognize the outstanding achievements that link excellence in human resource practices to strong organizational outcomes–ones resulting in workplaces that are desirable for stakeholders at all levels internally and externally. The judging process involves a number of steps. Applications are first screened by former WEA winners to ensure they satisfy basic requirements. A group of senior HR and business leaders individually review each approved application. Judges look for specific examples of how excellence in human resource practices tie directly and positively to organizational results. Finalist companies are referred to judges who conduct site visits to make their final determinations of the award winners.
According to a February 2012 CNN Money article, “Desperately seeking Americans for factory jobs,” manufacturers are being forced to hire people who are not fully skilled then train them. For over a decade manufacturing moved off-shore. A career as a machinist lost its luster; counselors and trade schools chose not to promote the machinist occupation. Manufacturing is now returning to the U.S. Manufacturers have jobs; they need trained employees.
In order to meet customers’ demands, QCMI needed to establish an Education / Training Competitive Workforce Initiative. The QCMI WEA winning initiative includes: a mentoring program for entry-level employees; promotion and training from within; partnering with high schools and colleges; and the creation of a nonprofit Academy. The HR initiative clearly targeted QCMI’s current, as well as projected, organizational staffing challenges.
In his remarks to the San Diego Union Tribune, CEO Bob Grande stated, “We are seeing positive results and are on track to have sources for the talent we need to continue to grow. We are defining the future of manufacturing, and the team at QCMI welcomes enthusiastically the challenge to continue to achieve workplace excellence.”
“The prestigious Marble WEA Medallion award is external validation of QCMI’s excellent HR practices and of QCMI’s position in San Diego as an excellent place to work,” said HR Manager Becky Quinn. “Yes, this is the ‘Oscars of HR’ and it’s with great pride we accept the honor for our team’s community and company-wide achievements.”
