QCMI Named One of San Diego’s Largest Manufacturers

SANTEE, Calif.  August 13, 2013 — Quality Controlled Manufacturing Inc. (QCMI), a leading precision manufacturer, is pleased to announce it ranked 19 on the San Diego Business Journal’s Largest Manufacturers List for 2013. QCMI was recognized as one of the region’s largest manufacturers based on its number of local employees (97) as of February 15, 2013.

QCMI was founded on October 25, 1978 by CEO Bob Grande in a garage. Its current 65,000 square foot high-tech manufacturing facility in Santee, California has nearly a million hours of machining capacity. QCMI specializes in the precision machining of all metals including exotic alloys. The company is ISO 9001 / AS 9100 certified, ITAR registered and Nadcap accredited for Nondestructive Testing. Recognized as UTC Supplier Gold for five consecutive years, QCMI provides a full spectrum of machining of general to complex components along with parts and assemblies.

In a recent San Diego Business Journal executive profile, Grande was asked about his philosophy of doing business. He stated, “I learned early on to do whatever it takes to satisfy the customer, and to this day we still do what it takes. With the addition of Six Sigma and lean manufacturing tools, QCMI has been able to maintain margins on current work and offer competitive prices on new work.”

QCMI is pleased to be included on the San Diego largest manufacturers’ list based on 97 employees. Yet, management believes that in order for domestic manufacturing to prosper, people with machining skill sets are needed to meet its current and future employment needs. According to a joint study by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute, there are as many as 600,000 unfilled manufacturing job openings in the U.S. alone. Most of these jobs are for skilled production workers in roles like machinists, operators, craft workers, distributors and technicians.

In order to address the skilled labor shortage, QCMI and Bob Grande established a 501(c)(3) foundation. The Grande Foundation operates exclusively for charitable purposes under the Nonprofit Public Benefit Law for public and/or charitable purposes. The foundation was organized to create a machinist academy where Veterans and other individuals will get vocational education in the machining industry and related lean business principals. The academy will increase participants’ skills and employment opportunities, as well as assist them in obtaining stable career paths.
